Understanding Where We Are Now

Motherly

Topline

  • Traditional coaching remains out of reach for many low-income mothers due to high costs and limited awareness of its benefits.

  • Motherly will offer free coaching to an initial group of 5 mothers, focusing on those most in need of support.

  • Coaches will be equitably compensated, prioritizing those with underrepresented backgrounds or shared lived experience.

  • Coaching costs total $15,000, with each engagement budgeted at $3,000 per mother.

  • Total initial budget is approximately $20,000, which includes coaching fees, a basic website ($2,000/year), and a community newsletter ($3,000/year).

Motherly is an initiative focused on expanding access to integral coaching for mothers from low-income and incarcerated communities. Integral coaching is a transformative method of care that helps individuals explore the root causes of their challenges, reconnect with their inner wisdom, and develop lasting personal resilience. Unlike approaches that foster dependency, this coaching empowers clients to cultivate clarity, strength, and self-awareness—guiding them back to themselves as the true coaches of their own lives, equipped to navigate future challenges independently.

Many mothers in underserved communities, particularly Black mothers, face significant barriers to accessing coaching because they don’t recognize its value or can’t afford it. At the same time, new coaches—especially those just starting out—often struggle to establish their practice because their own communities may not fully understand or recognize the benefits of coaching. This dual challenge limits both the reach of coaching services and the opportunities for emerging coaches to thrive.

Motherly addresses these intertwined issues by creating pathways that increase coaching access for mothers while simultaneously supporting coaches as they build sustainable careers. The project intentionally centers coaches with shared lived experiences, fostering culturally informed support that resonates deeply with clients. Coaches will also contribute to the ongoing development of the program through case studies that document client progress and highlight effective practices.

The initial phase of Motherly will provide coaching to five mothers, with plans to expand to ten participants as the project grows. Coaching engagements are budgeted at $3,000 per client, totaling $15,000 for the first phase. Additional resources will fund a website and a community newsletter, facilitating engagement and education, with an estimated annual cost of $5,000.

By nurturing a relational coaching model that values mutual growth and empowerment, Motherly aims to create lasting impact—for the mothers who receive coaching and the coaches who provide it—building a more inclusive and supportive coaching community.
